Living nearby to the tigers, and almost as rare, are the beautifully spotted Persian Leopards.

In the wild these big cats are found in the area formerly known as Persia, which includes countries such as Iran, Afghanistan and Turkmenistan. Due to the nature of the terrain, and the political climate in these countries, it is very difficult to undertake up-to-date surveys on their numbers, however this species is currently listed as endangered.

Interesting Facts

Leopards have incredible strength and are excellent climbers. To keep their food from scavengers they can easily carry prey up into trees, even animals weighing more than themselves!

Along with tigers these cats are one of the few that don't mind going into water, and are in fact strong swimmers. They are also capable of leaping 20ft (6m) forward in a single bound, and can jump 10ft (3m) straight up!

Meet the Leopards

Kalaf, the male leopard, was born on the 23rd March 1994 which makes him the oldest big cat living at Chessington Zoo. He is a laid back leopard, with a stubborn personality, he rarely comes into the house when called, instead he just sits outside silently staring at his keepers. Kalaf lives with Shakira and their daughter Sapphire, however while Sapphire is still young Kalaf and Sapphire are separated for her safety.
